Hans Braun, Spanking Illustrations
Welcome to Wednesdays with Gin! Every Wednesday I'll be sharing a new post on Smiles and Spanks. This week I'm featuring the artwork of Hans Braun.
"Hans Braun, a civil engineer from Munich in Germany, says that he went to a school where corporal punishment was an established part of the curriculum and later learned to draw in a rudimentary way at the college of engineering. Structures were his professional interest but the structure and form of female bottoms became a private obsession — perhaps just because they had been so notably absent in his monastic schooldays. His knowledge of the architecture of the bottom comes from the bedroom — he informs us — rather than from the life classes of an art school and he still likes to regard himself as an enthusiastic amateur in relationship to the subject matter illustrated here." – From The Drawings of Hans Braun (Phoenix Special, 1985)

"As one reviewer of a spanking novel plaintively recorded: 'Such writers can never leave a good-looking pair of knickers alone; either a woman has her knickers taken down or they are crudely pulled up!' The pulling up of briefs is likely to yield a substantial showing of bare bottom and with hoisted shorts an additional tightness can be assured by firmly cupping the undersides of the bottom, but it would be simplistic to overlook the fact that, when applied to women, the practice also embodies a symbolic attack on their sexual organs. During Nell's punishment the overseer interrupted his labours with the whip several times to smooth out the cloth, to feel the heat in the flogged bottom and to pull up the waistband 'until it hurt between the legs' and, in the twenties, we read of a women's school where women were bent over a table in the gymnasium and surmounted by another woman who tensioned the culprit's briefs upwards 'to bunch the stuff into the crack'." — Punishment Dress: text and illustration above from Phoenix No. 8
"If at the start of assembly, one of our number was seen to be on the stage with the staff, we most assuredly knew that there was going to be a whipping and that the dress she wore, although most proper at the front, would open behind to reveal her in a most vulgar way. For, when the time came, she would be led before the lectern and be stood on a little box, facing away from us, to give her hands to two of the servants. "Miss Bradwell will now be caned," would indicate that it was the woman's first offence that term and that, having had her wrists secured right forward at the base of the front table legs, she would be caned — whipped twelve times across the tightened surface of her drawers. This extreme posture — adopted to stretch the thin stuff and harden up a fleshy bottom — forced the head so well down that there was a danger of dizziness following after a short period. For this reason a caning across drawers was always executed with great rapidity. Even while two mistresses were fastening the hands, two others were taking their stations with canes so that, as soon as the poor creature was helpless she could be subjected to the quickest possible succession of cuts into the tight seat. — School Thrashings: text and illustrations above and below from "Indeed!"
